I'm studying for the MCAT, and I'm trying to find a pattern in the CARS section for the inference question, "In which of the following would one most reasonably expect to find this passage?" Based on one question, I got that the editorial page of a scholarly journal would be opinionated, but contain technical language. Theses tend to use more objective language, even when expressing an opinion. What other examples have you come across and what tone would be appropriate for each source?
